Here we get to know our Members and learn about how they got started, how life has changed and other interesting facts.

Today we are introducing the McNair Family. Nadie and her large family of 6 have recently decided to take their homeschooling adventures on the road and begin traveling fulltime!

GET TO KNOW OUR WORLDSCHOOLERS!

Introduce your family!

We are a large family of 6, 4 children Kaya (14) Keyon (13) Emen (11) and Zane (6)! Dion is retired Army and I’m a well Me 🙂 We are newbies to the worldschooling life, we are veterans to travel life, and were 2-year homeschoolers before our being jump.

What was life like before Worldschooling?

“Regular” with a side of homeschool, deployments and moving every 3 years. Ok Ok Not so regular but it was our life for 11 years. I was employed with the local school system to special need students and did homeschool lesson after work. Dion was a soldier and we balanced life like most families.

When and how did you first hear about Worldschooling?

Facebook! We were looking for a title to what we wanted to do and the term worldschooling was a staple.

How has life changed since you began Worldschooling?

WOW! I can’t articulate how our lives have changed. We are learning to follow our passions, embracing all of the fantastic experiences. The kids are more independent, compassionate, accepting to other cultures. My husband and my friendship has flourished! We have been forever changed by the opportunity!

What have been some unexpected benefits of Worldschooling?

Getting enough sleep! having four children they all had activities, we had work, volunteering etc. All of these requirements meant NO Sleep!

We have learned to live without extras, we went an entire month without Ketchup. LOL! We all understand the value of a need, we are humbled in a way that was unachievable before.

Meeting amazing people, hope in humanity restored!

NUTS & BOLTS

Could you share your monthly travel budget?

Yes, we try to keep our accommodations under $1000 a month, and we save monthly for flights. We do have the added benefit of military flights which saves us on the long hauls.

How do you fund your travels?

We use retirement, BNB, and leveraging our Social Media when we can.

How do you choose your destinations?

Discounts! Honestly, we will use the military flight to get us to a destination, for example, Hawaii to California and then use Skyscanner to search for the cheapest day and location. The accommodations is normally our secondary selection. Every place has history, language, learning opportunities.

How long do you stay in one location and why?

We normally stay around 30 days at each location.

What does a typical Worldschooling day or week look like for you?

We do school every other day, the other days are spent exploring. We try to eat and live local and normally stay in a BNB away from the touristy spots. On school days we do foundational education and interest-led learning. We also focus on location-specific learning.

What has been the hardest part of Worldschooling & Traveling? How did you handle it?

Being away from close family!! We facetime daily, we send packages from our locations, we write letters to them often.

SUMMARY

As Worldschoolers, if you could step back in time, what is one thing you would do differently?

Pack less !! I know everyone says that, but really we packed WAY too much stuff. All of the clothes, shoes, meds, workbooks, reading books, shoes, hygiene products!! Why oh why did we bring so much extra stuff?

What would you tell someone who is considering Worldschooling?

It will never be right, there will not be a time that you feel completely prepared but do it anyway. If only for a month, or a year what will be gained in that time is unfathomable.
