Why We Travel – The Reasons Why We Changed Our Lives

How does Worldschooling start? How does a family decide to sell it all and travel the world? There are many different reasons, and every family is different. This is our story!

This story began completely unexpectedly.  I didn’t want it to happen (although I certainly won’t complain!), I wasn’t expecting it to happen, I didn’t even know I needed it to happen… it just, well, happened!

I guess in truth the story began almost a year beforehand.  We had too much credit card debt, bills were mounting up, and I was working crazy hours in my business, trying to help us get ahead!

In searching for ways to make more money, I stumbled across an online course – the Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp with Denise Duffield-Thomas.  Let’s just say I was super excited to get started but then life got in the way, and 12 months later I was still getting ready to start.  BUT, one of the amazing benefits of this course is the incredible bunch of women that Denise has assembled in her Facebook Group (access is given when you subscribe).  I knew I was too busy to do the course. However, I was determined to let this positive influence into my life, so stuck with the group.  This meant that every time one of the other course members posted something, a wonderful, positive, feel good comment would come up in my Facebook Feed.

Fast forward many months, and during a family holiday, just before boarding a plane one day, a post came up in the group highly recommending a book called “The 4 Hour Work Week“.  I’d never heard of it, but as I was about to board a plane and would have time to kill, I quickly purchased the book and decided to read it onboard.  The book subtitle is “Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich”… so clearly it is about improving your life… what I didn’t realize, was just how much my life would change when I opened this book!

At the time of boarding this flight, what did my life look like? Well, we all dream of the perfect job. For me, it was Cake Decorating! 5 years earlier I had posted a few pics on Facebook, of cakes I’d made for friends and family, and suddenly, a business just landed in my lap.  Within 48 hours I had 9 orders and 100 followers!  5 years on we had a Commercial Kitchen, a Retail Shop, 7 Staff and over 50,000 followers on Facebook. It was an amazing ride, BUT, I was exhausted!  I once calculated that since opening I created over 2000 individual cake tiers! That’s just CRAZY!  I still enjoyed making cakes, but I was starting to realize that being in business for myself was not just about making cakes. Admin, customer service, payroll, accounts payable, ordering, etc.  The majority of my time was spent on anything but cakes!

So as I started to read The 4 Hour Work Week I began to question what I was doing… it was at this point that I realized… I love my family, I love my home, I love my friends, but I’m spending ridiculous hours at work (away from my friends and family), coming home every day exhausted and constantly feel like I’m missing out on those things that are truly important to me.

As I continued to read The 4 Hour Work Week, I started thinking about my dream life.  If I could do anything, what would it be?  What do I love to do? What am I passionate about? And then I got scared.  I had been so focused on cakes for the past 5 years that I didn’t have an answer to that question. How could I not know what I enjoy doing?

So I thought on it… and every time an idea popped into my head I jotted it down in my iPhone!

IfIcould

After a couple of days, the list wasn’t very long! And what’s more, there wasn’t much on my list that was realistic – as much as I loved to travel, it certainly wasn’t something I could do full-time!! But what it did do was get me thinking about the year ahead. What did I want to achieve?  That list was a whole lot longer!

The more I wrote, the stranger I felt.  Suddenly I felt alive! I felt motivated! I felt excited! And then this popped up on my Facebook Newsfeed! Coincidence maybe, but perfectly timed – definitely!!!

Saying

The 4 Hour Work Week changed my life, by introducing me to a topic I was completely unfamiliar with – location independence. While traditionally, in Australia at least, we grow up, go to school, go to University, get a job, buy a house, get married, have kids and pretty much stay put, this book suggested an alternative. With today’s technology, the need to stay in one place is no longer as important, and it is entirely possible to work online, making you free to work wherever you want to!

This realization hit me like a lightning bolt. My dream life list above included travel, however, never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be possible. But what about the kids? As I began to research I discovered another new term – unschooling, or worldschooling. I researched frantically, excited at this possibility but completely skeptical. But, the more I read, the more I realized that this new type of life was entirely possible.

So, fast forward 14 months, and I sit here in my Airbnb home in Mexico, having just arrived in Playa del Carmen. We sold our home, our business and most of our possessions back in Australia and we now travel the world full time! We work online, and we educate our children through day to day experiences and exploring of this incredible planet.

Our lives have changed completely. There is no resemblance to our past lives at all. Our days are whatever we want them to be. We are free. We are happier. We are closer as a family. And I for one, am certainly more relaxed about life than I’ve ever been. Making such a huge change in our lives wasn’t easy, but the rewards have been incredible. My only regret? That I didn’t do this sooner!

And this is why I’ve created Worldschooling Central. Only a few short years ago, I couldn’t have imagined where my life was headed. I didn’t even realize that this way of life was possible, let alone how I would ever bring the dream to life. Worldschooling Central is designed to help our community, from those that are in the early stages, and dreaming of what could be, to those that have been traveling for years and are looking for new adventures. As Worldschoolers we belong to an amazing community of families, who have a connection unlike any I’ve seen before. Worldschooling Central provides a place for all to share and help each other on our adventures!

I invite you to join in and share your experiences – help those that are just getting started realize just how wonderful this life can be!
