Two American mothers, married to Indonesians founded Pelangi in 2006; they also had a background in education and non-profit management. These parents wanted to start a school for their mixed heritage children in the place they called home, Ubud.

The vision was to create an inclusive, bilingual school, catering to mixed children as well as expat and Indonesian children. The aim was that Pelangi would be a place where mixed kids, their Indonesian cousins, and their international friends could all feel equally secure. Pelangi planned to enroll 75% full-tuition-paying students, and 25% low-income scholarship recipients, ensuring cultural and economic diversity. The aim was also to provide a school in the local area of Ubud without children having to endure long journeys to the south of the island to schools outside their local community.
A Yayasan board was formed, and the doors opened at Pelangi on 1 August 2006 with 12 students, by the end of this year 40 children had attended. The original founding members have since moved on. However, two of the original Yayasan members are still passionate Pelangi board members.

Today over 150 children attend Pelangi School, and they have evolved into a respected bi-lingual international standard school with a distinct community feel, providing a high level of education to its multicultural students. They cohort of students represents 32 nationalities from across the globe. The staff team of 40 is lead by a core team of experienced western and Indonesian educators and includes administrative professionals as well as operational staff.

The original Pelangi vision is still strong, and they pride themselves on being a school where Balinese, Indonesian and the international expatriate community co-exist together as one family.

The end of the 2012/2013 school year marked a special turning point for Pelangi. The school as a whole has come full circle with our grade six students moving onto high school, having been at Pelangi from its inception. These students have not only seen the school grow with them and their needs but evolve from a grassy playing field with just a few circular bamboo classrooms, to an all new purpose built campus.
It is thanks to donations, community support and most recently one very generous donation from a parent that the school has been able to grow into what it is today! Thank you to all those who have and continue to support Pelangi!
